Warsh speaks at ten, his first Jackson Hole as Chair. It is his first extended account of how he reads the economy rather than a summary of what a committee decided, and he has signalled the remarks lean structural rather than toward near-term guidance, which is the sort of framing that lowers expectations without actually removing the risk. Three voters dissented for a hike in July, the first three-way dissent in the same direction since 2016, and the market prices roughly one in three for September against a meeting that is under three weeks out. Chicago PMI at 9:45 and the final Michigan survey at ten are the undercard. SPX closed 7,731, up 0.7%. Premarket 7,734, up three.
Yesterday's tape was narrower than the index makes it look. The S&P rose 0.7% while the equal-weight version of the same index fell 0.16%, which is what happens when one name carries everything, and Nvidia added about $435 billion of market value while technology was the only sector to advance with any size. Then Marvell reported after the bell, beat on revenue at a record $2.74 billion, guided the current quarter above consensus on both earnings and sales, and fell more than 7% after hours. A day after Nvidia broke the long habit of selling good chip news, the habit came straight back — and it came back on a company that did nothing wrong, which is the same complaint the last five weeks have been making.
Premarket sits fourteen points over the flip at 7,720, and that is the whole cushion. The shelf underneath is better than that sounds, because the put wall at 7,700 carries the 20 SMA at 7,701 and prior resistance at 7,698 on the same number, which makes it a three-way floor rather than a gamma level standing on its own. Overhead reads as a plateau rather than a wall. The call wall at 7,770 is barely larger than the strike beside it, and the whole band from 7,730 up through 7,790 is continuously positive with nothing dominating it, but the strikes above the wall sum to roughly 5,180 against the wall's 2,369, so clearing 7,770 pulls rather than caps. That sum-above test has now decided the read five sessions running without failing. Price is also sitting on prior resistance at 7,734 as it is.
The lean is long while 7,720 holds, and 7,725 is the better entry than chasing the shelf overhead. Past the call wall there is nothing on record, since the levels database stops at 7,763 and gamma is the only guide above that. The caution is vol: VIX 14.48, under the marked 14.78, and that is the third event running it has declined to pay for. It was right the last two times, when neither core PCE nor the Nvidia print produced any expansion at all. Losing 7,720 hands the session to the other side, and the negatives between the flip and the put wall are heavy enough to make that trip a quick one.

GEX Profile (Aug 28)
- Call Wall
- 7,770. Largest positive at 2,369, but only a quarter larger than the strike beside it. The strikes above sum to about 5,180. Pulls rather than caps.
- Gamma Flip
- 7,720. Premarket fourteen over. Calculator and the magnitude rule agree, so no ambiguity.
- Put Wall
- 7,700. Twenty points under the flip — the narrow shelf again, but with the 20 SMA and prior resistance on the same number.
