Waller moved the September hike. The Fed governor said he would back holding rates where they are if inflation data keeps cooperating, and odds of an increase fell to about half from 63% on CME FedWatch. SPX rose 1.06% to 7,747.71, its best session since August 4, and the Nasdaq gained roughly 1.4%. Premarket 7,754. August payrolls land at 8:30, consensus near 53,000 after July lost 23,000.

The thing being priced and the thing being released are not the same. Waller's condition was inflation, and Warsh named PCE as the gauge he acts on when he told Jackson Hole the labor market was effectively at full employment, so a payrolls print can confirm neither man's terms. It can only pressure the one claim Warsh made about jobs. June added 20,000 and July lost 23,000, a net loss of 3,000 across two months, and unemployment is still forecast to hold at 4.1%. A labor market that has stopped hiring while the jobless rate stays flat is one where the labor force is shrinking to match.

Premarket sits 34 over the flip at 7,720, and the gamma on either side of it is not remotely symmetric. Above price the positive band runs thick and unbroken from 7,755 to 7,835, carrying the largest node of the day at the 7,780 call wall and the second largest at 7,800, which is why clearing the wall pulls rather than caps. Underneath, the positive gamma does not hold so much as drain away: it falls to nothing between 7,750 and 7,725, turns negative at the flip, and below the 7,700 put wall every strike stays negative through 7,660 with no positive node anywhere to slow a move. Prior demand at 7,719 sits on the flip, and 7,713 sits on the 20-day.

The structure favors the upside while 7,720 holds and stops favoring anything the moment it doesn't. 7,746 is the first bid and it works if the number is fine, but it carries eight points of cushion before the gamma underneath starts draining. The level worth waiting for is 7,720, where the flip and prior demand arrive on one number and dealers still absorb. Under 7,700 the levels keep coming but the gamma does not, and rallies are for fading until it is back.
