Gap Up Into the 50-Day

Sent to members at 8:30 AM ET on Jul 21, 2026. Posted here the next trading day.

Key numbers

7,469.98
Premarket

SPX is trading 7,470 premarket — 27 points above yesterday's close and 4 points above the 50-day SMA at 7,466. The gap clears a level that's acted as resistance for the past week. Before getting aggressive long, a backtest of the 7,443–7,450 zone holding would go a long way.

Context is mixed. The U.S. carried out a tenth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, but ceasefire talk helped ease oil prices overnight. Trump announced 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods — milk, hockey equipment, beer, plywood — effective in 30 days, though energy, autos, and metals are excluded. Asia ripped — MSCI Asia Pacific up 1.7%, Nikkei up 2.2%, South Korea and Taiwan both up over 2.5% on chip strength. VIX is indicated around 17.5, down from Monday's 18.65 close. GM reports before the bell. Alphabet and Tesla after the close Wednesday.

We're 85 points below the gamma flip at 7,555. Negative gamma. The call wall at 7,545 is 75 points above premarket. The put wall at 7,410 is 60 points below. The 8 EMA daily at 7,499 is 29 points above — that's the next overhead reference.

If the 50-day at 7,466 holds on a backtest, the 8 EMA at 7,499 is next. If the gap fills and 7,443 breaks, the put wall at 7,410 is the anchor below.
